Rain Water for Home Decoration

Water plays an important role in each person’s life on earth. In fact being one of the five elements of nature, water has therapeutic properties also. This fact has further given impetus to growing awareness about usage of water in home decoration.
Since, water is a precious element and not to forget that fact that countries world-wide are taking steps to conserve water, we also need to add our bit and use water with utmost care.

Collecting rain water is not an unusual phenomenon anymore. The rain water is a gift from nature and one can easily and intelligently make use of rain water in home decoration.

Generally, while thinking of water-based home decoration, first thing that comes into our mind is aquariums. Aquariums have wonderful properties as the gurgling sound of water filter inside aquarium relaxes the mind and removes stress. Aquariums are believed to join the Five Elements together in one expression, i.e. Water, Earth, Fire and Air.

Rain water for aquariums can be collected in containers. The best simple and easy way is to let rain water gather on the roof top and then divert it to one drain pipe that collects the water from the roof and takes it to a tank on ground. Usually a 500 liters tank can suffice. However, bigger tank can be used for collecting a larger quantity of water.

As a matter of fact, the roof top is generally clean and the water tank should also be free of dust and cob webs.

This water can be used in aquariums post treatment. One has to make sure that the collected water is treated properly before it is stored in a tank. Further the collected water can be exposed to sun for few hours. However, care should be taken that water in the aquarium should be changed after 24 hours or purified with UV light and air bubbled through it to increase the dissolved Oxygen levels.

We cannot overlook the fact that rain water gets polluted due to the pollution in the atmosphere. Therefore effort has to be made to make sure that water is not polluted. The rain water is considered to be pure as it involves the process of evaporation and condensation. It would be better if the rain water is collected after few spells of rain and not immediately after first rain of the season.

Moving water attracts attention of everybody. Moving water in particular is said to give off negative ions, which help to negate the positive ions generated by modern living that can be harmful to our well being.

Waterfalls inside buildings look appealing to eyes and are a good place to rejuvenate and get relaxed for a while. And the best part is that, Rain harvested water can be excellently used for indoor waterfalls as unlike aquariums, it does not have living creatures.

The system is absolutely convenient. Usually, the same water is circulated inside the water fall with the help of machines. So, the collected water can be put to use and this way the need to fill the fresh water for waterfall can be done away with. Similarly, the rain harvested water can be used for water fountains too.

In order to protect the front door from being hurt by bad external energy, Feng Shui suggests that it is best to have a water feature near-by front door as it helps in bringing good luck. Water fountain is a good fit, into this theory.
Not only the harvested water can help in irrigation of gardens, it can enhance its beauty too. Small earthen colorful pots for birds to drink water can be kept out doors.

Water can also be used for outdoor ponds. Water has many properties apart from being a relaxant. Feng Shui and Vastu consider water as one of the most powerful of five elements.

Water is essential for our survival.

Water-harvested water can be easily re-used for domestic and irrigation purposes.
For domestic purposes, one can collect rain water from roof top through pipe into a big container in the garden. This water can be diverted to irrigate the garden. The water from the tank can also be used for washing utensils or even for washing clothes. If any house has a pet, it would be a good option to bathe pets in garden. This way, the excessive water can be soaked by grass or soil.

It can also be routed for drip irrigation for plants. Many countries, where water is scarce, the procedure of harvesting water and then re-circulating it for drip irrigation, are followed.

Still, if one is not interested in doing either of these activities, then the best one could do is just to divert the pipe carrying rain water to the ground. This way we can contribute towards replenishing ground water table.

According to estimates, 85 % of India’s irrigation needs, and 80 % of its domestic water supplies comes from ground water.

Estimates also reveal that by 2020, India’s demand for water will exceed all sources of supply. Climate Change projections show that India’s water problem is likely to worsen.

According to a World Bank study, of the 27 Asian cities with population of over a million, Chennai and Delhi are ranked as the worst performing metropolitan cities in terms of hours of water availability per day, while Mumbai is ranked as second worst performer and Calcutta fourth worst.

Hence, one should never forget that water is a God’s gift to mankind and its depletion is already a cause of contention among nations.

We are fortunate that this season, we have received more rainfall in Delhi than earlier years. And if weather-man is to be believed, Delhi will witness more rain.
So why not avail this opportunity gifted to us by God?
