The concept is not new in the Indian context. Organic farming has been practiced in India ever since the civilization marked its existence. Rural India is entirely dependent on agriculture using organic techniques, where fertilizers, pesticides, etc., were obtained from the plant and animals. Organic farming was and is the backbone of the Indian economy. And now when the whole world is going gaga over the green concept, India already has an edge over the others.
It is an established fact that organic farming can contribute to the food security of millions of farmers and hence is important for a country like India. With the new wave of organic farming, India can once again be on the favourite. We were already there for our ayurvedic medications but now with the change in the whole concept of farming, Indian farmers will get all the applause they had long been deprieved of.
I saw an organic farm near Gurgaon the other day and I was amazed to see the place. It is located somewhere near Rajasthan amongst the sandy area. Amongst all the barren land, you sudddenly see the green trees, lush plants and crops growing. This farm was started by a couple some 20 years ago, it spreads across 40 acres. AUroville in Puducherry is another example of organic farming and I am sure, there are several farms like this in the country. Such farms can really bring a wave of change to the society as a whole.
